A key premise of CaliforniaState University at Monterey Bay’s “assets” philosophyis that students’ prior knowledge and experiences shouldbe used to foster learning in college. This pedagogicalstrategy, coupled with the institution’s interdisciplinary,problem-based curriculum, helps instill a sense of agencyin students. Valuing students’ prior knowledge andexperiences is a bridge to connecting students to thecurriculum and to helping them make meaning of theirundergraduate experience. Many faculty members designassignments that integrate adult students’ work and lifeexperiences into the classrooms.
